Happy Yule to all! It is the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. This is the time of year that we can rest and reflect on our lives, open up to renewal and set new goals for a wonderful life. I chose this cabin as my picture for Yule because I would LOVE to be curled up in a soft warm blanket sitting by the fire, writing in my journal and sipping a great hot tea. This is my idea of rest and reflection for sure!

Have I always rested and reflected during this time of year? (Or ever) NO: I was very busy for 20 years as a nurse. I have been a nurse in a hospital working 14-to-16-hour days, I have been a nurse manager on a unit in a hospital, I have been a home health nurse, and I have been a director of nursing for an assisted living facility. My nursing career was 24/7/365, my phone was ALWAYS on, and I ALWAYS answered it. YES, I KNOW BUSY LIVING!!!

It is hard to relax when you have all that going on and believe me I didn't. I don't think I even knew how to relax or breathe. This led to BURNOUT! I couldn't relax during my breaks or vacations much. When I retired and moved into the truck with Andy, it took a good 3 months to not jump when the phone rang and even turn the thing off. Now I have it on "do not disturb" from 10pm to 7am. (I no longer jump when it rings either.)

Something I have learned in the last year:

As humans on this planet, we have a responsibility to ourselves to take time out of our busy lives to JUST BE and BREATHE, even if it is just for 5 minutes a day. Life gets very busy, but it truly is a self-responsibility to decide what is important in YOUR life and YOU choose how to live YOUR life! always remember this and you won't play a victim. This is the secret to a fabulous life!

Take time to learn how to relax and breathe if you don't know how. This is like a muscle you need to exercise and develop muscle memory, so you have it in times of need. Check out YouTube for a plethora of ways to learn this and tuck it away in your self-care toolbox. Yes, everyone needs a self-care toolbox, as I have said before, it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves to be able to take care of the world around us.

Happy Yule to all, remember I love you for being here.
